Is flossing necessary to maintain good oral health and wellness?

At the downtown Montreal practice of Dr. Lenny Slepchik, his patients have access to a variety of dental solutions for their smiles. Additionally, he works directly with patients to educate them on ways to keep their smile healthy. Common problems such as the development of plaque, tartar, and calculus can impact oral health, while conditions such as periodontal disease and tooth decay can damage the teeth and gums. Many patients will ask if flossing is necessary daily for good oral health and wellness, and the answer is a resounding YES!

What is flossing?

Flossing is an oral health habit that can significantly improve your  dental  health.. It is often overlooked when compared with brushing the teeth, which many patients do at least twice a day to maintain a healthy smile. Flossing your teeth is as important because it allows our patient the chance to remove food particles that can become stuck between the teeth and along the gum line and contribute to the formation of infection and disease. Using a flossing thread, patients can floss between the teeth at least once a day to see an improvement in their oral health and wellness. This is essential to maintain healthy gums, which are the foundation of your teeth.

How do I floss properly?

During a dental visit at Dr. Lenny Slepchik’s office, patients are encouraged to ask questions regarding their oral health to educate them on ways to maintain a healthy smile. Flossing is easy and your dental hygienist will review with you the best way to floss.

  • Choose a floss that is appropriate for your needs.
  • Use the floss between the teeth and up towards the gum line.
  • Use new floss each time.
  • Consider using special flossing products if you have metal orthodontics in place.
  • Use a mouthwash immediately after flossing to wash away remaining food particles.
  • Floss at least once a day, or after every meal if possible.
