Your teeth aren’t the only part of your mouth that needs attention. The gum line is equally important; gum grafting can restore your gums Here’s how.
What Does Gum Grafting Do?
Gum grafting is a surgical procedure where your dentist replaces receded gum tissue . Tissue is transplanted to any area where your teeth could use extra coverage. This material often comes from the roof of your mouth.
Why Might You Need Gum Grafting?
Different factors, such as gum disease, can cause your gums to recede. This may eventually lead to the roots of your teeth becoming exposed, raising the likelihood of tooth decay, bone loss, and discomfort.
It can also happen to people who brush too forcefully. Others experience recession following injuries, due to tobacco use, or as a result of having misaligned teeth.
What Should You Expect From Gum Grafting?
This procedure is done under local anaesthesia. After preparing you, a flap is created and the roots are cleaned. Tissue is taken from your palate and placed over the exposed roots. You’ll receive sutures that may dissolve naturally.
This surgery does not take long and is not painful.
Gum grafts usually take a couple of weeks to heal. During this time, be sure to follow the recommendations you were given.
