Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

What is Sleep Apnea?

People who have obstructive sleep apnea stop breathing while they are sleeping. This pause in breathing can last for up to two minutes. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles of the throat relax during sleep, therefore blocking the airway.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea presents differently in each person. If you or someone in your family notices a significant change in your breathing while you’re asleep, it’s important that you speak with your doctor about a sleep apnea screening. Common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Loud snoring (loud enough to disrupt the sleep of others in your home)
  • Excessive fatigue during the day unrelated to other issues
  • Sore throat or dry mouth upon waking
  • High blood pressure
  • Changes in mood, including depression
  • Struggle to focus during the day
  • Gasping or choking while asleep
  • Observed periods of time without breathing during sleep

Excessive sleepiness can be especially concerning, as it can affect your ability to work or drive. If you have sleep apnea, you may find that no matter how much you sleep, you never feel rested.

While not everyone who has these symptoms has sleep apnea, it’s important to be screened for the condition if you’re showing symptoms. In addition to providing a device that can help reduce or eliminate your sleep apnea symptoms, your dentist can also talk with you about lifestyle changes that you can make to reduce or eliminate the number of times you stop breathing at night.  If you have moderate sleep apnea, the DSAD may help you. It is smaller and lighter and much more comfortable.
